Set Up Game Views

Now that we’ve deployed the game environment, let’s investigate the current state of the Alien Attack game by opening up both views of the application: the Game Environment where players can play Alien Attack and the Manager Console where we can see players’ scores.

Both can be found in the alienattack.application folder inside your environment.

Access the Gamer Console

  1. In your Cloud9 Environment, select the file alienattack.application/game/index.html

  2. Right-click the file to open the menu, and select Preview. A browser will be opened in Cloud9. You should see a screen similar to the one below. Image

  3. Notice that we’ve circled a box with an arrow on the righthand side of the file URL. Click on this icon. This will open the application in a separate tab in your browser.

  4. Right-click inside of the window of this new tab and select Inspect or Inspect Element to see the browser’s Developer Tools.

  5. Select the Console tab within these developer tools. You’ll notice that this tab shows a 404 ERROR along with the message ERROR LOADING CONFIG. This is our first clue as we begin to fix the Alien Attack game.

Access the Manager Console

We will open the Manager Console similar to how we opened the Gamer Console.

  1. Select the file alienattack.application/scoreboard/index.html

  2. Right-click the file to open the menu, and select Preview. A browser will be opened on Cloud9. You should see a screen similar to the one below. Image

  3. Notice that we’ve circled a box with an arrow on the righthand side of the file URL. Click on this icon. This will open the application in a separate tab in your browser.

Now that we’ve seen the current state of both applications, we need you to work on the environments so that the Alien Attack game runs properly. Make sure you keep both the Manager Console (scoreboard) tab and the Game Environment (game) tab open throughout the remainder of this workshop.
